HobaCare Blog

Last year we started our Jojoba 101 series in which we chronicle all the variety of things jojoba can be used for besides skin care. This week it was time to season all the wooden utensils in the kitchen, so we thought it was fitting to share this particular use. Jojoba makes a fantastic conditioner and protector for unsealed wood. It is great for use on kitchen utensils because jojoba is safe enough to eat (though we don't recommend actually ingesting jojoba).

It is a great alternative to mineral oil, which is a petroleum based product. Our tips for using jojoba to protect and condition your wooden items: sand lightly with fine grit sandpaper, apply jojoba liberally, wipe off any excess jojoba after allowing it to soak in for an hour or two.

jojoba used to protect timber fram beams

We love jojoba so much that the beams in our timber frame facility are protected with jojoba. We also use it on all of our wooden handles for garden tools and pretty much any wooden item that we want to protect with a breathable finish.

Jojoba makes an excellent carrier for essential oils, we won't got into the nitty gritty of why in this post, find out more on our post dedicated to this topic. We decided to do a Mix of the Month, essential oil mixes to make and use. Since it's that time of the year when many are plagued by colds and flus, we decided a little decongestant essential oil mix would be useful. This mix was developed by me over a few years. When I was a kid, my mom used to rub Vicks Vapo Rub on my chest, I loved the results, but I hated the way it felt. The great thing about jojoba is that it doens't have that sticky feeling, it absorbs quickly into the skin, no sticky residue. This mix is not just for those times of sickness, but also whenever you're feeling a little congested, perhaps by allergies.

5 drops essential oil of peppermint
10 drops essential oil of white camphor
1 drops essential oil of thyme

Place drops of essential oil in roller bottles, top off with jojoba, shake gently. For use, roll on palm, rub palms together, inhale mix, then rub on forehead, temples, and behind ears. Follow by cupping hands and placing them over nose, take a few moment to breathe in the benefits. Also rub generously on chest and bottoms of feet is congestion is bad, this is especially helpful to do at night. Hopefully your sinuses will start to clear in a jiffy. Try using this blend with a lymph flow facial massage to help remove excess congestion.

There are a few precautions with any essential oils: Never use undiluted, in eyes or around mucus membranes. Do not ingest. Do not use for a prolonged period of time. Keep away from children and do not use essential oil on children or pets unless directed by a professional (cats in particular are very sensitive to essential oils, never use on cats). Avoid while pregnant and with homeopathics. May cause skin irritation (test on a small patch of skin in an insensitive portion of your body with proper dilution rate).

Being someone who loves the juniper & herb smell of gin, I decided that it would make a fantastic beard oil. As with any essential oil, the varieties chosen for this beard oil have benefits in addition to smelling great. Not only is this mix great for beards, it's a great hair treatment as well, fighting frizz, providing aromatherapy and herbal benefits to your hair.

Essential oil of juniper is woodsy and of course reminded us of a great gin. Like rosemary, juniper stimulates the brain and helps reduce fatigue and depression. Juniper is also a tonic, meaning that it tones all systems, which of course is great, especially for the skin of the face. Juniper is said to decrease hair loss and help with the symptoms of dandruff.

Essential oil of rosemary is reported to be valuable for a wide variety of reasons, from stimulating hair growth to boosting the immune system. Studies show that rosemary essential oil increases hair growth, making it grow stronger and longer. It's also beneficial for dryness and flakiness, which can happen when to your facial skin when you have a beard. Probably the best reason to use rosemary essential oil is because it stimulates mental activity. It is reported to increase concentration and reduce cortisol levels in saliva.

Essential oil of lemon is calming and is said to help reduce mental fatigue, nervousness, and anxiety. It is said to be very useful for the skin, rejuvenating tired skin and it is said to be helpful in the treatment of acne and other skin issues.

Geranium oil promotes cell health and a long-lasting deodorizing effect, not a bad thing at all. It's a long lasting scent, so you'll still smell the floral/mint scent of this oil after the other oils have lost their robustness. Geranium is also useful in the treatment of acne, dermatitis, and other skin issues.

We decided to do a Mix of the Month, essential oil mixes to make and use. Today we're tackling headaches, something we all deal with from time to time. This mix was recommended to me by an essential oil consultant friend. I made a batch and gave it to a few friends & family members for testing. The results were very positive, in fact there have been requests for refills already. There's a bottle on my desk and in my purse just so I can have it handy when I need it. Not only is it good for headaches, but it's invigorating. If I'm driving and find myself getting a bit fatigued I use it.

Since Bob and Brian are participating in No Shave November, we decided a recipe for a stress reducing beard oil would be fitting. Jojoba makes a great beard oil for many reasons, you can read our post with all the details here. Jojoba by itself makes a great beard oil, but we thought adding a few essential oils that reduce stress would be a great option, especially since the holidays are coming up. We chose our essential oils for this mix for a variety of reasons, but the most important reasons were for their stress reduction effects.

Sweet orange essential oil helps create a happy, relaxed mood with its wonderfully fresh scent. It is reported to alleviate anger, depression, and anxiety. Like rosemary, it also reduces cortisol levels, which is why we chose it for our stress less beard oil mix.

Essential oil of juniper is woodsy and of course reminded us of a great gin. Like rosemary, juniper stimulates the brain and helps reduce fatigue and depression. Juniper is also a tonic, meaning that it tones all systems, which of course is great, especially for the skin of the face.

Since cradle cap affects roughly 50% of babies, there's a great chance that you will have to deal with this pesky problem if you have children. Babies have very sensitive skin which means they are more sensitive to harsh ingredients than adults are. Since jojoba is non-allergenic will not cause adverse reactions in infants, even those with ultra sensitive skin. If you have a baby with cradle cap try jojoba before you try other treatments, especially those that contain chemicals or harsh ingredients. Jojoba conditions the skin and will help relieve cradle cap almost immediately. Simple use a few drops of jojoba on your baby's scalp, massage into the scalp paying special attention to the areas affected by cradle cap. Use a soft brush to comb away scales, repeat as needed. Jojoba is safe enough to use after each bath, consider adding it to your baby's skin care routine (and don't forget to you use in on your own skin as well).

jojoba for treating cradle capOf course our customers say it better than we can:

“I've used your jojoba for washing/moisturizing my face for about five years now. In that time, I've found other great uses as well. Last night I found yet another and it worked so well, I felt the need to reach out.

My toddler has perpetual cradle cap from needing EEGs for his epilepsy. We've never been able to find anything to get the EEG goo and the cradle cap out. Last night I massaged jojoba oil into his scalp and started combing it all out! 100% amazing.

So many uses for such a great, safe and local product.”

-Kellie from Wiscasset, ME

Have you used jojoba for cradle cap? Tell us how it worked for you.

Our customers tell us that they can tell a difference between our jojoba and other brands of jojoba. What makes ours better? For the past 20 years, our focus has always been on quality. We continually work with our growers and processors to make sure our jojoba meets our exacting standards. When you try our jojoba you will notice a difference, it goes on smoothly, has only a slightly nutty smell, and it absorbs quickly into the skin leaving no tacky residue.

the highest quality jojoba

Our jojoba is First Press quality. The pressing is a light pressing, thus resulting in less quantity, but a higher quality product. This is the main reason you can see, feel, and smell the difference between our jojoba and others. A light pressing yields only about 38% jojoba from the seed, where some forms of pressing will yield up to around 50%. Some producers also use solvents to extract more jojoba from the seed. This results in more jojoba, but a much lower quality jojoba. The result is a beautifully golden product that retains its natural beneficial properties and benefits for the skin. Some processors deodorize their jojoba to remove smell and strip it of its natural color. We never do this, which you can see from the naturally golden color of our product. Our jojoba is pure. The only thing we do is filter the jojoba through a one micron filter. This removes any residual solids from the pressing process.

filling jojoba bottles

The Jojoba Company is a small business with only a few employees. We are able to work closely with our growers and processors to ensure a consistently high quality product. We also pay close attention to detail when bottling the product, which we do here in Waldoboro, Maine. Each bottle is filled and labeled by hand, each order is then packaged by hand. We pay close attention to quality throughout the process and are happy that our customers can tell the difference both in quality of product and quality of customer service.

pure jojoba

The Jojoba Company offers 2 types of jojoba: 100% certified organic jojoba and pesticide free jojoba. With our certified organic jojoba, we are committed to going above and beyond the 95% organic standards put forth by the USDA. In our 100% certified organic jojoba, no chemicals are used, none. No pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides are used in our certified organic or non-organic product. Our pesticide free jojoba uses commercial fertilizers during growth or it may come from fields that are in transition to organic (a process which takes 3 years).

pure natural jojoba

The results of all of our hard work is evident. You can see, smell, and feel the difference in our jojoba. Our jojoba is pure and naturally non-allergenic. It’s safe to use on newborns and is beneficial for all types of skin. It doesn't clog the pores and absorbs quickly leaving no tacky residue. Jojoba is for everyone!

hand packing jojoba

Here in the office, we all use jojoba in different ways. Our employees use it for daily face care, make-up removal, shaving, baby skin care, cat care, aromatherapy, and our two volunteer firefighters use it to keep their hands from drying out. There are other uses besides personal care, the interior timbers of our barn are treated with jojoba, we use jojoba on squeaky hinges, to polish our shoes, preserve wooden plant labels, and the rags used to wipe up any jojoba spills during filling are used to start winter fires in the wood stoves of employees. We feel good knowing that the product we sell is pure, natural, and the best it can be.

If you’re looking to minimize toxic ingredients in your skincare and streamline the products you use, consider using jojoba as your makeup remover. In fact, jojoba is such an effective makeup remover that the Blue Man Group uses it. One our customers tells us that her eyelashes are longer and fuller now that she is using jojoba as her eye makeup remover. Pure jojoba has many fantastic benefits for the skin, which make it the ultimate makeup remover. In case you haven’t spent much time reading about these benefits on our website, here are a few: non-comedogenic, non-allergenic, and prevents dryness, alpha, delta and gamma tocopherols found in jojoba are all forms of Vitamin E, which eliminate free radicals.

jojoba is the perfect makeup remover

Using jojoba to remove makeup is a simple process. There are two methods, try both and see which one works best for the makeup you use and your skin type.

First method: add a few drops of jojoba to a damp cotton ball or cotton pad then wipe over face and eyes. Use multiple cotton pads if you use lots of makeup. If there is still makeup in your lash line, add a drop or two of jojoba onto a cotton swab and rub along lash line. When all traces of makeup are removed, rinse face with water and wipe with a damp washcloth or use your favorite cleanser, then apply a drop or two of jojoba to your face.

Second Method: add a few drops of jojoba to fingertips, massage over face/eyes. Wipe with a clean, dry cloth or cotton ball. Repeat if needed. When all traces of makeup are removed, rinse face with water and wipe with a damp washcloth or use your favorite cleanser, then apply a drop or two of jojoba to your face.

jojoba is a fantastic non-toxic makeup remover

Jojoba can also be used as an alternative to oils in the oil cleansing method. Simply massage a quarter teaspoon of jojoba onto your face for a minute, then lay a hot, damp washcloth over your face for a minute. Wipe your face with the damp washcloth and you’re finished. This method will remove makeup and dirt.

You can also use jojoba to clean and condition your makeup brushes. It is especially beneficial if you use natural bristle brushes. Massage a few drops into the brush, wash with shampoo or Dr Bronner’s soap, and let dry. It’s beneficial to massage a very small amount of jojoba into the brush after washing to maintain the natural bristles.

jojoba is the perfect makeup remover

Using jojoba as your makeup and/or face cleaner streamlines your beauty routine. Not only will you need fewer products at home, travel will be easier. Jojoba can be used for so many things, it may be one of the only body/skincare products you need to travel with.

Have you tried using jojoba as a makeup remover?

Note: Not all jojoba is created equal, some brands of jojoba include lower quality jojoba, deodorized jojoba, or jojoba with other ingredients. Make sure you are using only first press, unrefined jojoba on your skin, especially the delicate skin around the eyes. This is especially important if you have sensitive or reactive skin! Rest assured our jojoba is of the highest quality.

Jojoba’s non staining quality is very important to our clients. We receive many comments on how important this quality is. Massage therapists love that it doesn’t stain the sheets and doesn’t cause a rancid smell after a year. Others love that it doesn’t stain their clothing if they accidentally spill it or put too much on. When used properly, our jojoba will stay in the skin. If it is coming out on linens and clothing, you are very likely using too much. Try reducing the amount of jojoba being used to reduce skin of jojoba transferring to fabric.

jojoba a non staining product

Our jojoba launders out of natural fabrics with the use of hot water and a good detergent. For synthetic and dyed fabrics we sometimes use a pre-wash. If you have combined oils, lotions, creams or essential oils with our jojoba, they could the cause stains. Also, and especially for massage therapists, if you applied lotion or cream to the skin prior to the massage, those substances could cause staining. If you use cold water and dry the fabric, a mark may be visible. Relax, the mark will not be permanent. Likewise, the mark will not turn rancid. Off-putting odors will not be a problem. The next time you launder the item, cover the mark with a pre-wash, dishwashing liquid makes a nice treatment. We especially like Shout stain treatment or Dr Bronner’s Sal Suds. After pretreating, use hot water and your regular detergent. The mark will launder out. Or, if very hot water is not available, learn from this tip one of our our customers gave us. She had found a jojoba mark on her dark 100% cotton turtleneck, which had not come out in a cold wash. She re-washed the garment after putting soda water and baking soda on the mark and letting it soak for a bit in her machine. Even though the garment had already been through her dryer, the mark came out.

jojoba a non staining product

Brian, one of our employees, noticed that he gets a lot of jojoba on his shirt cuffs when attending trade shows. He simply adds a little Sal Suds to the cuffs before laundering in hot water with an all natural laundry detergent. They come out clean as a whistle every time. This method also works when there’s an accidental spill of jojoba on clothing here at the office. It’s worthwhile to note that some non-toxic laundry detergents don’t work very well at getting jojoba out of clothing. If your detergent is one of these, simply pretreat with a laundry stain treatment, dishwashing detergent, or Sal Suds.

Lotion bars look like bars of soap, but they are a solid form of lotion. They are extremely useful on extra dry skin and for protecting skin from detergents and overwashing. Beeswax in the mix adds a waterproof barrier to the skin, yet still allows the skin to breathe. Here at Jojoba, Sally recommends using it before heading out to work in the garden. She says it makes it much easier to get your hands clean when you're finished with garden chores.

homemade lotion bars

There are many recipes for lotion bars out there, we found that far too many include canola oil and other oils that don’t have a long shelf life and run the risk of going rancid. Some recipes include grapeseed oil and vitamin E to increase the shelf life of the finished product. This is where jojoba shines, since it’s a wax ester and not an oil, it’s long shelf life makes it the perfect ingredient in lotion bars. There's no need to buy additional ingredients to preserve your final product. Jojoba also keeps the bars from being too greasy like some we’ve tried that use oils of some other variety. We have also tried several lotion bars that are difficult to apply, not so when you use jojoba in your lotion bars. The qualities of jojoba make it the perfect ingredient in homemade lotion bars.

This is a quick and easy project, melting the ingredients takes the longest. Once you make a batch you’ll be giving them out as hostess gifts, for baby showers, and just because you want to share the love of the lotion bar.

homemade lotion bars

HANDMADE LOTION BARS
½ pound unrefined shea butter
½ pound organic beeswax
½ pound HobaCare jojoba
We recommend sourcing unrefined, fair trade, and organic ingredients if possible.

The weights/measurements aren’t exact, if you don’t have ½ pound of each simply use a third of each ingredient. You can melt and measure in a cup if you don’t have a kitchen scale.

Place all ingredients in a double boiler, we use a glass bowl over a pan of simmering water. Watch carefully, you want the ingredients to melt but you don’t want them to get super hot. Be very careful to not get any water in the mix, it can cause it to seize up and separate. Place molds on kitchen rack and pour melted mix into molds. After about 10-15 minutes you can empty molds and refill if you have extra liquid, if not allow to cool in molds. This recipe makes a fantastic lip balm too, simply pour warmed liquid into small tins or empty lip balm tubes.

100% handmade soap mold for lotion bar

We used this 100% Handmade mold, this lovely decorative square mold, and these super cute insect molds.

You might wonder: can I add essential oils to my lotion bars? YES - you can, though you have to add a decent amount for the scent to come through. Add essential then cool a small amount to check for scent. Use lemongrass and citronella for a bug repellant lotion bar. Use lavendar and vanilla oil for a calming nighttime blend. Rosemary and sweet orange would be a great mix for a daytime bar.

Have you ever used a lotion bar?
