As we’ve been collection 101 uses for jojoba, we’ve come across some very beneficial ways to use jojoba instead of other products. Some of our clients use jojoba on their leather goods.
If you think about it leather is skin, with pores and fibers that no longer have the ability to protect themselves. This is why leather goods benefit from protection and conditioning and why they dry out and crack if we fail to maintain them. It’s also why using non-porous finishes on leather isn’t a good idea, leather needs to breathe and be able to release moisture. Protecting leather while allowing it to breathe will keep it soft and strong for years to come. By using jojoba, we are extending the life of our leather goods with a product that is similar to skin’s natural protection.
Leather goods will develop a beautiful patina when used frequently and cared for properly. The oils produced by our skin are transferred to them which naturally darkens and protects leather goods. Some leather items like wallets are more likely to be handled, others, like our shoes can use a little extra help. Since jojoba is very close to our the natural sebum our skin produces, it is the perfect product to condition our leather goods. Many leather conditioning oils contain chemical additives, if you’re trying to remove chemicals from your life, jojoba is a natural option for conditioning your leather shoes, wallets, bags, baseball gloves, etc. without chemicals.
Jojoba’s non staining quality is another fantastic benefit for using it on leather. If too much is added accidentally and it rubs off on clothing, jojoba will come out easily in the laundry (see our laundering directions).
Since jojoba is very shelf stable and doesn’t go rancid, this also makes it beneficial as a leather protector. There is no need worry about leather goods developing an off smell or getting sticky, which can happen with oils.
Here are the simple steps to use jojoba to condition, soften, and help protect your leather goods:
Use a few drops of jojoba on a soft, lint free cloth (an old sock works very well)
gently rub the jojoba into the leather, working over the entire piece until it’s absorbed. If needed add a few extra drops of jojoba on your cloth.
Buff with a soft brush or a clean, soft rag (once again, an old sock works well for this)
That’s all there is to it. We love using jojoba as a shoe polish. There’s no need to carry additional products when traveling, a quick buff with jojoba every now and then keeps shoes and other leather goods beautiful and protected.
If your leather has been colored or stained, it’s important to note that jojoba will not re-stain it to the original color, you will need to add the correct color stain to the leather before adding jojoba as the protectant.
If you are dealing with a leather piece that has unfortunately mildewed or developed mold, we have heard that mixing five drops of tea tree oil with a teaspoon of jojoba to use on the leather after cleaning away the mold/mildew. To clean leather of mildew, use a rag soaked in vinegar and allow to dry. A little time in the sun will also help remove mildew. Once mildew is gone, follow with the same steps as listed above but use the tea tree/jojoba mix to keep mildew away.
Have you used jojoba to condition and protect your leather goods? Do you have any other great uses to add to our 101 Jojoba campaign?
Essential oils are quite strong and should be diluted before applying them to skin, if not burns and other severe skin reactions can occur, particularly with children, the elderly, or those with sensitive skin. While some people recommend using some essential oils neat or undiluted, many practitioners recommend using a carrier for essential oil, especially hot or spicy oils like oregano and thyme. Using a carrier isn't just to dilute the essential oils, it also helps with absorption and minimizes evaporation of the essential oils.
We think jojoba makes the perfect carrier for essential oils (notice we don’t call it an oil, because technically jojoba isn’t an oil, it’s a wax ester). Here’s why we think you should use jojoba as a carrier for essential oils.
Jojoba is a "fixative". While it has a mild, almost imperceptible scent of its own, it takes on the scent of its immediate environment. After HobaCare has been in your skin for a minute or two, you will not perceive its scent, only your own.
Likewise, HobaCare Jojoba fixes, or makes permanent, the scent of essential oils you add to it. This characteristic makes HobaCare an ideal carrier or base for essential oils and perfumes. Adding essential oils to HobaCare enriches one's experience with the product, whether it is used for skin, scalp, hair, massage or any of the other applications described on this web-site.
Unlike carrier oils, such as sweet almond or grapeseed, HobaCare does not become rancid. HobaCare jojoba does not oxidize or turn rancid. It has an indefinite shelf life and will help extend the shelf life of your essential oil mixes. For best results store the mixtures in dark, closed, glass bottles or in glass bottles that are stored away from the light. Essential oils are light sensitive and lose their effectiveness with prolonged exposure to the air.
Also, unlike other carriers, HobaCare mixes naturally with our skin's fluid; it does not stay on top of the skin but penetrates it, carrying the essential oil(s) with it into the skin. HobaCare is also non-allergenic. It's a liquid ester akin to the esters we produce in our own skin. Jojoba is the perfect carrier for persons with ultra sensitive skin.
Jojoba is also a non-staining product, since it’s not technically an oil. It won’t stain your clothes like fractionated coconut oil. If your essential oil rollerball leaks in your bag or on your clothes, jojoba will wash out easily. It washes out of clothing and linens with hot water and detergent. If used appropriately, the product will stay in the skin and will not come out on linens or clothing. For more on this, see our Laundering Instructions.
As a general rule, the following proportions are recommended for aromatherapy recipes using jojoba:
- General Massage and Face Recipes: 20 to 25 drops of essential oil (or combination of essential oils) to 100ml (approx. 6 3/4 Tablespoons) HobaCare Jojoba
- Massage of Specific Body Areas: 35 drops of essential oil (or combination of essential oils) to 100ml (approx. 6 3/4 Tablespoons) of HobaCare Jojoba
- Bath: 20 drops of essential oil (or combination of essential oils) to 60ml (approx. 4 Tablespoons) of HobaCare Jojoba
- Hair: 50 drops of essential oil (or combination of essential oils) to 70ml (approx. 4 3/4 Tablespoons) of HobaCare Jojoba.
Write on the bottle containing the recipe, the name of the essential oil(s), the date, and the purpose for which the recipe was made.
Have you used jojoba as a carrier? What properties do you like most?
There are a few precautions with any essential oils: Never use undiluted, in eyes or around mucus membranes. Do not ingest. Keep away from children and do not use essential oil on children or pets unless directed by a professional (cats in particular are very sensitive to essential oils, never use on cats). Avoid while pregnant and with homeopathics. May cause skin irritation (test on a small patch of skin in an insensitive portion of your body with proper dilution rate).

Jojoba is a versatile product that can be used for a wide variety of applications. Massage, aromatherapy, and skin care are the most common uses, but we hear of other creative uses from our customers frequently. Jojoba is also used in many applications that are not related to personal care. Can we come up with a list for 101? With your help we think we can. We'd love to hear your creative or common uses for jojoba. Let us know how you use HobaCare jojoba. If you have a business or blog make sure you include that so we can link to your website. We will add your creative ideas to this list and feature them on our facebook page.
Naturally we try to find as many uses for jojoba as possible. Since jojoba is a natural product, it’s ecologically friendly if we can use it for in place of chemicals for various applications. Now that we are in the height of winter we wanted to share a use that we have found to be quite useful. Using jojoba to wax snow shovels!
(this shovel has not had an application of jojoba, you can see the snow is sticking to the blade)
Yes - you heard us right - we use jojoba on our snow shovels to keep the snow from sticking!!! Since jojoba is technically a wax ester and not an oil, it will help maintain a very nice slick surface on snow shovels.
Here are a few tips for waxing your snow shovel:
Make sure snow shovel is room temperature. Since jojoba solidifies at temps below 50 degrees, it will solidify like a wax and you won’t be able to apply it easily to a cold shovel.
Pour a teaspoon or so of jojoba onto the shovel and rub in with your fingers. Alternately, you could use a paper towel, but why waste the jojoba, you might as well condition your hands while you condition your shovel. When you’re finished, rub any remaining jojoba into your hands.
Now you’re ready to start shoveling without the hassle of snow sticking to your shovel. Once you try this method you’ll be hooked. Happy shoveling!
Let us know if you have success using jojoba to wax and condition any other item you use in snow or water.
We have been getting a few calls from worried customers about cloudy or solidified jojoba. This is perfectly normal and there is no reason for concern. As the temperature drops jojoba will become cloudy or become solid. Hardening at lower temperatures is a normal process that occurs with most waxes and fats. Typically, jojoba will start to get cloudy or solidify at around 50 degrees fahrenheit. During winter more customers will experience this natural process. If you look at the image on the left, you will notice that one of the bottles of jojoba is clear and the other is cloudy. The bottle on the left was exposed to cold temperatures. After an hour or so at room temperature it looked just like the bottle on the right.
If your jojoba arrives cloudy or solid, allow it to reliquify at room temperature. The time required for this to happen will depend on the ambient room temperature and how cold the jojoba is. Please do not attempt to reliquify jojoba in boiling water or by placing it in the microwave.
Solidification does not affect jojoba's quality, however it may effect a separation of the phospholipids, a white wispy substance that can settle to the bottom of the container. Phospholipids are good for the skin. Shake the container well to reintegrate them.
Have you noticed your jojoba becoming cloudy or solid at low temperatures?
We've been working on getting our blog up and running for a few months now, gathering ideas, taking photos, writing articles....

First of all welcome to our new website. It has been a long and complicated process that has taken over 9 months. What started out as a need to provide our customers with a better online experience morphed into a decision to scrap our old site completely and start over.
It is truly remarkable that although we only sell one product, first-press Pesticide-Free and Organic HobaCare Jojoba, our site and the inner workings of it can be so complicated. We ship HobaCare Jojoba all over the world. Sometimes one 4oz bottle. Other times pallets of boxes full of gallons. In both cases the website has to be able to handle the order, the calculation of shipping, and the interaction with the customer. Because of this we feel like we need a customized solution.
But this is only the beginning. We are going to be constantly working to improve the site and its functionality for you, our wonderful customers. So take a look around. There is a lot to see. And please excuse the dust.
Finally, be sure to Like Us on Facebook and write a post on our wall about your thoughts on the new site!
I want you to know I appreciate your wonderful customer service. There is never a delay in the shipment of my order and I very much appreciate it.
I ordered one gallon of jojoba online yesterday afternoon and I received it this morning at 9:30!!!!!
Thank you so much for your prompt service.
After more than 20 years of practice I have used numerous products. The Jojoba Oil is superior to any and all.
The glide is perfect and I have yet to find another product that can rival its positive effects on the skin. And as a therapist who does mostly medical work, it is a wonderful thing to have found a product that none of my clients are allergic to.
I started out trying the jojoba on an older leather day planner that I have. It is in very good condition, so I didn't think I would see much of a difference. Boy, was I wrong! I didn't realize how dull it was until I used the jojoba on it.
Thank you! I just wanted to say that I am just getting into making my own cosmetics and had been searching high and low for the most responsibly produced jojoba. This is very good quality at a fair price...
I love how it absorbs into the skin and leaves it silky smooth, what a fantastic carrier it is for essential oils, that it doesn't go rancid, so my sheets remain sweet-smelling and that the (jojoba) is so stable with an incredible shelf-life. What's not to love?
I love this product. My esthetician had been using it on my skin for years. Trusting her knowledge of skincare and product-lines for the last 20+years, I decided to wean myself from traditional body moisturizers in 2018, and transition to jojoba oil for my basic skin care moisturization.
I like doing business with companies that care, and I feel that you do.
I continue to be impressed with your company and the high standards that it promotes. Your responsiveness to questions, shipping and customer service is top notch. Thank you for everything.
